The PCME STACK 181 is suitable for measuring particle emissions after both bag filter and electrostatic precipitator arrestment plant.

Utilizing the patented ProScatter™ Forward Scatter measurement technique for measuring particulate concentration levels, typically between 0.06 mg/m3 to 300 mg/m3, this measurement technique offers improved levels of performance which make the PCME STACK 181 very suitable for use as a PM CPMS or PM CEMS that need to comply with US EPA PS-11 for Site Operators looking to satisfy the recent MACT and MATS rules.

Due to the inherent rugged design, the PCME STACK 181 Particulate Monitoring System is suitable for use in a wide range of applications within the Power, Incineration, Cement, Chemical, Metal, Mineral and Petrochemical industries:

  • Reliable and rugged design, proven for long term operation at elevated temperatures and with minimized instrument maintenance

  • Forward Scatter measurement technique with automatic zero and upscale checks that fully challenge the system's ability to measure forward scattered light and satisfy daily drift checks

Process Conditions

The PCME STACK 181 is suitable for:

  • After bagfilter, cyclone and electrostatic precipitator arrestment plant

  • Non-condensing / dry flue gases*

  • Both constant and variable flue gas velocities

  • Corrosive flue gases (corrosion protection option)

  • Variable particulate size

  • Explosive atmosphere zones 2 and 21

Typical Applications

The PCME STACK 181 is used to monitor emissions from the following types of processes:

  • Municipal Waste and chemical Incinerators

The PCME STACK 181 is capable of monitoring the very low levels of particulate associated with particulate contamination and clean work environments as well as the more substantial dust levels associated with explosive dust levels, eg:

  • Automatic control of air extraction plant based on ambient dust levels

  • Personal dust exposure monitoring

  • Contamination control

  • Tunnel monitoring

  • LEL and HEL explosive dust level monitoring

Resolution and Sensitivity

The PCME QAL 181 uses a low-angle forward light scattering measurement principle unique to PCME (see ProScatter™ Forward Scatter). The measured cone of scattered light is larger than normal for light scatter instruments, which provides:

  • Excellent sensing resolution and sensitivity, due to an increased signal-to-noise ratio

  • Reduced cross-sensitivity to changing particle size, allowing a greater range of applications for which the instrument is suitable

Inherently Reliable Design

Using tough high-grade components and enclosures, and designed to overcome problems encountered with alternative light scatter technologies, the PCME QAL 181 offers outstanding reliability:

  • No optical fibers, which are prone to degradation in elevated temperatures

  • No moving active measurement parts, ensuring sensing components remain correctly aligned. Alternative technologies require movement of the position-critical detectors for the performance of self checks. The PCME QAL 181 avoids this by introducing a diffuser into the light path, which gives the additional benefit of a true check of the instruments ability to measure scattered light, rather than just attenuated light

Quality Assurance/Audit

As an approved Particulate Measurement System for compliance monitoring, the PCME STACK 181 is supported by filter audit units which are an approved reference material for conducting quarterly linearity checks as Absolute Correlation Audit (ACA).

To audit the instrument, the sensor is temporarily removed from the stack and Filter Audit reference “scattering bodies” are inserted onto the PCME STACK 181 measurement zone.  The resulting response is measured to ensure linearity and also to provide a reference check that ensures contamination is not affecting the performance of the instrument.

  • 316 stainless, with corrosion resistance for option SO2 (e.g. for Flue Gas Desulphurization plant)

  • Stack temperature ranges 0-250°C, 0-500°C

  • RS485 (Modbus) output to control unit or third-party PLC

  • 24VDC power supplied via control unit

  • IP65 die-cast aluminum enclosure

  • External Audit Unit for 5-point linearity check

  • ATEX/IECEx category 3G/2D for gas zone 2 and dust zone 21

Control Unit

  • Single Channel Entry and Standard units, or 1-32 Channel ProController unit for extended sensor networking capability

  • Industrially hardened display screen and enclosure with icon driven, multilingual menus for intuitive user interface

  • Data logging: Simultaneous recording of pulse data (for arrestment plant cleaning diagnostics), short term data (for process control), and long term data (for external emissions reporting)

  • Alarming: Local (audible and visual), and via 4 x user selectable relay outputs (ProController), expandable via 'ROM' module

  • Ethernet (Modbus TCP) connectivity for industrial network integration

  • 4 x 4-20mA and 1 x RS485 (Modbus RTU) outputs (ProController), expandable via 'AOM'

  • External Inputs: Accepts input data from external devices (e.g. for temp and O2 normalization, plant off indication, bag cleaning reference, multiple calibrations) via digital and 4-20mA inputs, expandable via 'AIM' module

  • Pulse log review for diagnosing location of leaking bags or failing ESP plates
